I worked with Judi on film, on radio, but mainly, of course, on television in clever Bob Larbey's "As Time Goes By".  I would've liked to have worked with her in the Theatre but sadly that's never happened.  I assume that's because, being a Dame, she must have casting approval -- mustn't she?  (laughter)  But you never know, do you?  But in spite of that, I have enjoyed working with her. (laughter)  In fact, there are many joys in playing opposite Judi and to me, one of the greatest is and I don't know if this is because she's invariably doing three other jobs at the same time or whether it's just a case of the advancing years but -- sometimes ... (laughter)  She knows what's coming ...  (laughter)  I wouldn't say often but just sometimes she's not totally on top of the lines.  (laughter)  Sorry, luv.  Now it can be told ... as a result of which -- she and I appear with embarrassing and humiliating regularity on "Auntie's Bloomers".  But the good side to that is, every time we appear on "Auntie's Bloomer", I get another all be it tiny contribution from the BBC towards my pension fund.  And for that, Judi, and a few other things, I'd like to say thank you very much.  (appaulse)

SF:  Geoffrey, "As Time Goes By" was an enormous success and I know Bob Larbey wrote it with you in mind ... and presumably, Judi must've been first choice, too ...

GP:  Ummm ... no, I'm afraid not.  (laughter)  Actually, she was quite a long way down the list.  (laughter)  No, we nearly had Jean Simmons on board and I'm immensely grateful that we didn't.  (laughter)  But um -- Jean Simmons was going to be on board and then she found that she was involved with other things and couldn't do it.  So in the end, we searched about and somebody, I don't know who -- I wouldn't have had the courage -- suggested Judi and of course, she doesn't read anything and she didn't know who I was or who the director was ... but she said yes and then the BBC found out that she couldn't do it for another four months -- at which point, Sydney Lotterby, distinguished producer, and I said, if you've got Judi Dench, we'll wait for her.  So we waited for her.

SF:  And it was worth the wait ... So -- you did eight series of "As Time Goes By" and I hope we get more ... But you've also played with her twice in "Mrs. Brown" and "Tomorrow Never Dies", the Bond film.  What's it like having her as a boss?

GP:  It was alright.  (laughter)  I found her more professional in film -- you know -- the money's better (laughter) and she took it very seriously (laughter) ... She'll never work with me again ...

SF:  Ladies and Gentlemen -- the twinkling and brilliant, Geoffrey Palmer.  (applause)
