NOT QUITE SENIOR CITIZENS BEHAVING NOT QUITE SO BADLY
Theatrical legend Dame Judi Dench made a spectacular return to sitcoms during the 90s in one of the decade's most beloved programs. Dame Judi had previously spent four seasons during the early 80s starring alongside her late husband Michael Williams in A Fine Romance. This sweet comedy about a prickly translator who falls for a bumbling landscape gardener was the work of Bob Larbey, one half of the writing team behind Good Neighbors and several other sitcoms. So when Larbey came up with the idea for another sitcom, Dame Judi was ready to listen. She agreed to star in As Time Goes By, and hired as her co-star was the equally formidable Geoffrey Palmer.

ATGB is the story of Jean Pargetter (Dench), who is reunited with her former love Lionel Hardcastle (Palmer) after a nearly 40-year span during which both led very different lives. Their paths accidentally converge once again and after a series of starts and stops they end up doing what they should have done year earlier - they marry.

ATGB was one of the few 90s sitcoms that harkened back to the more traditional fare of the 70s. Of course this isn't surprising given its creator. The pace is slower, the situations more down-to-earth and the humor more gentle. The show is blessed with its wonderful lead actors as well as a great supporting cast. Phillip Bretherton brings likeability to the otherwise smug, arrogant character of Lionel's agent, Alistair. Moira Brooker (as Jean's daughter Judith) and Jenny Funnell (as Jean's employee and Judith's friend Sandy) also add charm and youth to a terrific ensemble. As mentioned in the news section of this issue, ATGB is not yet done. A new set of episodes will be filmed this year, updating fans on what has happened to Jean, Lionel and the rest of the gang. Sadly, it will be without the luminous Joan Sims (who played Lionel's stepmother Madge), who passed away last year.

Season Nine -- SPOILERS

If you don't want to know what's going to happen in advance,
then don't scroll down any farther.

****************

Here's what we know so far ...

Season Nine picks up where Season Eight left off
(possibly with a couple of months gone by).

Episode #1:  Alistair realizes who he wants - and that he should settle down.  But which will come
first - his business dealings or romance?  And is Jean there to help the situation along?

Episode #2:  As the ladies start the wedding preparations, Alistair's nerves seem to get the best of
him.  How does he deal with that and what role does Lionel play?  Rocky, Mrs. Bale
and Lol help out with the plans for the reception at the country house.  Penny and
Stephen drop by for a visit but they might not be able to attend the wedding --
                      why not?

Note:  Due to the death of actress Joan Sims last year, "Madge's" absence has been
attributed to "a trip to Egypt".

Episode #3:   Judith and Alistair's Wedding
They finally made it to the alter.  The ceremony took place in the same church
as Rocky and Madge.  Harry was at the wedding but was too nervous to ask
Sandy to go to Canada with him -- feeling he doesn't have enough to offer her.
Stephen inadvertently turned down the OBE -- he ticked the wrong box on the
form.  Needless to say -- Penny is not talking to him.

Episode #4:  While straightening up Judith's room, a sad Jean finds a note under her pillow --
something Judith did as a little girl.  Sandy thinks about moving out now that  Judith
is married -- but Jean won't hear of that and Lionel points out now that Sandy will be
running the business, she'll be making more money.  Sandy decides to stay.
On his way home from returning his wedding suit, Lionel finds a shoddily dressed
woman with a ring in her nose named, "Dave", sitting on their steps.  Jean makes up
an excuse to go to the police station to talk to Harry.  When she returns home,
Dave is still sitting on their steps.  It starts to rain and a worried Jean invites
Dave to come inside.  Alistair and Judith make a surprise visit on their way to
Barbados and invite everyone to the pub for champagne.  Lionel doesn't want to
leave Dave alone in the house.  Jean thinks it will be OK and puts money under
a pot to test her.  Harry shows up at the pub, whisks Sandy back to the house and
proposes.  The others return home to help Sandy pack for Canada ...

Final Scene:  Jean and Lionel are in bed.  Lionel is snoring, Jean is fretting about
their "empty nest" -- hoping for grandchildren to come and visit and suggests that
they do something exciting.  It ends with her reading a travel brochure ...
                      "Trekking in the Andes" ...

Special Episode -- You Must Remember This
'Just when you thought you'd never see Jean and Lionel or this endearing
comedy again, here's a compilation of all the best bits.  Jean (Judi Dench)
is trying to persuade Lionel (Geoffrey Palmer) to write "part two" of his
autobiography, the bit where they met up again after all those years.  "It
sounds made up!" is Lionel's response.  There then follows clips of that
meeting and all the other key moments from the past 64 episodes, each of
which Jean maintains could make a chapter.  And if ever you wondered why
this charming comedy is so popular, watch this.  The proposal scene is
quite perfect.'
