Judi's next appearance will be in Stratford. It is the RSC Open Day - a day of workshops, discussions and events celebrating 75 years of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the close of The Complete Works Festival. At mid-day John Barton talks with Judi and Ian McKellen on how Shakespeare's text helps the actor. In the evening Judi is joined by Sinead Cusack, Ian McKellen, Antony Sher, Donald Sinden, Juliet Stevenson, David Warner and Michael Wood at the Courtyard Theatre for the Great Shakespeare Quiz! Thought you might like to know that I went to see "The Merchant of Venice" performed by the Theatre for a New Audience based in New York, with F. Murray Abraham playing Shylock. An absolutely brilliant performance with rave reviews..

On Feb. 4 at 7:30 Judi Dench, Jeffery Dench and Jamie Glover will be at the Civic Hall Stratford-upon-Avon (14 Rother St.) for a benefit in support of young musicians. "The Seven Last Words" is the Bergonzi quartet playing Haydn, String Quartets Opus 51 with reflections on the Biblical text in drama and poetry devised by Cordula Kempe in aid of the Rudolf Kampe Society's International Young Artists Platform. Phone 01789-207 100. Not much info at the website given on the poster I saw in the lobby of the RSC theatre. http://www.rudolfkempesociety.org/. The music will be violins, viola, and cello. Thanks to Carolyn and Connie for bringing this to my attention More Info ... Sister and borther veteran actors Dame Judi and Jeffery Dench are not only appearing side by side in the Royal Shakespeare Company's Merry Wives of Windsor - the Musical, but the duo wil also be performing together at the Rudolf Kempe Society's next concert in the Songs of Appolo series The Seven Last Words at Stratford Civic Hall. Joined by actor Jamie Glover, the Dences will be reading thought-provoking words and poems with reflections on biblical texts at the concert which also features the Bergonzi Quartet playing Haydn's String Quartet Cycle opus 51. The performance takes place on Sunday, February 4 at 7:30 pm and the programme for the evening has been devised by the Rudolf Kempe Society's artistic director Cordula Kempe. She said: "The last words of Jesus Christ form the Cross related in the Gospels represent a climax in Haydn's oeuvre, musically reflecting what are now two milennia of Christian culture and its drama of innocence adn guilt, crime, punishment and expiation, forlorness and despair suffered by the individual in the face of death - but also testifying to the power of the human spirit to overcome, and to what may be its divine origin. "Historians, philosophers, dramatists and poets of all cultures - religious believers, agnostics and atheists alike - have studied this subject and its consequences and, in the face of all its horror, sorrow and distress, pointed to sources of hope, comfort and strength, often found in human relationships and even in the sense of humour that is so conspicuously absent form the narrative of the Gospels." "Drawing on these aurthors" relfections, the programme offers thought-provoking texts blended with music of exceptional poignancy and beauty as a tribute to life." Coventry Telegraph -- December 12, 2006 DAME Judi Dench will be the guest of honour at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust's first event of 2007. She will appear with her biographer, John Miller, and will discuss her life and work and her latest book, Scenes From My Life. Her appearance, at the Shakespeare Centre on January 10 from noon, will be the first in a series of literary events at the trust. Audience members will be invited to put their own questions to the much-loved actress at the end of the session. Scenes From My Life is a photographic history of Judi's stage and film career, and an intimate portrait of her family life. It includes photos from her most recent work, starring in Hay Fever at the Theatre Royal Haymarket and as M to Daniel Craig' s 007 in the new James Bond movie.

info Carolyn T's Account of her experience ... Yesterday, January 10th at 12 noon here at the Shakespeare Centre in Stratford a packed house were priviledged to attend Scenes from my Life featuring Judi Dench in conversation with John Miller. She did a similar thing at the National Theatre about 14 months ago when her book first came out. There is another book-soft cover- which has been updated to include Casino Royale and Hay Fever. As always she looked very glamourous in a pure white three-quarter length coat and dark grey trousers. As I was at the back of the room the details were unclear For an hour despite a cough Judi enthalled the audience with tales from her past performances-often quoting lines from plays she had been in many years ago. And there were lots of laughs! She seemed very relaxed as she often says she feels at home in Stratford. It's where she and Michael and her family spent many years and she has many friends here. She talked about Casino Royale and how good Daniel Craig had turned out to be despite the bad publicity on his selection. She also talked about Merry Wives of Windsor and the famous cartwheeling across the stage! And she did mention her grandson Sam who has been up here for the holidays asking how she did the cartwheels with her bad knee!! To digress- when I saw the musical the young man who did the cartwheels dressed as Judi lost his wig on the last cartwheel!! Judi covered it up by rushing back on to the stage out of breathe clutching her wig! I wish I could remember every little detail of what was said it was all so fascinating. One comment she made which brought a loud murmur from the audience is that Judi starts preparing for Christmas in July!! After the talk she signed copies of her book before leaving to rest up for the evenings performance. On February 4th there is a concert of words and music where Judi will be reading passages and poetry together with her brother Jeffrey-who is also in MWofW- and Jamie Glover. Something else to look forward to.

Dame Judi is going to be on the Christmas episode of ITV's Parkinson Show with other guests listed as the fabulous Peter O'Toole, Lenny Henry and music from Catherine Jenkins. Apply for tickets at www.tickets.granadamedia.com Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available A Special Thank You to Sian N, UK, for bringing this to my attention Added 11/28/06 Sian N, UK -- Account of the Parkinson Show Hi Chris, As promised I said I would let you know how the taping of the Parkinson show went if I got in, please find below a little account! Feel free to use all of it, bits of it or none of it!!!! The guests on the show were comedian Lenny Henry, Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins and Judi Dench but not Peter O’Toole as had previously been advised. Before the show Parky said that it was the Christmas show, (hence the Christmas tree and all the decorations!) and that it would be shown the Saturday of Christmas week which I am assuming will be Saturday 23rd December. When Parky was telling the audience who was going to be on the show before the filming actually started he said that Judi’s new film Notes on a Scandal would be released at Christmas, he was then told by the floor manager that it is actually out in February to which he replied ‘well she’s just told me its out at Christmas!’ which got a laugh. Notes on a Scandal is obviously out here in the UK a lot later than the US which is a shame! Judi was the second guest out after Lenny Henry and looked lovely. She was wearing a black dress with knee high boots and looked stunning. Before coming out they showed a clip of Judi in Casino Royale and it was the scene where James Bond breaks into her apartment. Parky started the interview by asking about Bond and asking about how she felt working with Daniel Craig and the criticism that he faced before anybody had even seen the film. He then moved on to Notes on a Scandal and Judi said that she had actually read the book as it had been given to her a few years ago by Geoffrey Palmer. As in previous interviews she said that she never reads a script but that she did the film because she loves working with Richard Eyre and she knew that Cate Blanchett would be playing the role of Sheba. Perky commented on her appearance in the film and she agreed that it wasn’t the most attractive of characters and that she was glad to leave the character in the trailer at the end of a day’s filming! After showing a clip of Notes on a Scandal – which does look like a very good film – they went back to Judi who revealed that she has always been and still is scared and afraid of groups of schoolchildren!! Parky then moved onto Judi’s next project at Stratford which she said she was looking forward to. He asked if she would be singing in the musical and she said that she has 3 songs. She refused to sing a bit from any though as she said they wouldn’t make sense to anyone which was a shame! Parky referred to Michael and her history at Stratford and asked if she had any outstanding memories of being there. She couldn’t think of any which was quite funny!! Eventually she mentioned a story about Macbeth at The Other Place which I’d not heard before. Parky asked Judi if she’d ever done a Pantomime before as he is currently in Panto this Christmas playing the voice in the mirror in Snow White. He asked her to look directly into the camera and say ‘Mirror Mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all’. After she had the reply was a film of Parky’s bit that appears in the Panto which was very funny. When it went back to Judi she asked if he was playing a man or a lady because she couldn’t tell, that was particularly funny as he looked a bit offended! The interview with Judi seemed to be over all too soon and she definitely got the biggest cheer of the night. One thing that always amazes me seeing Judi in real life is how small she is, she has such presence when she’s on stage or on screen that it’s still a surprise to see her completely dwarfed when standing next to people like Michael Parkinson and Lenny Henry!! I hope that when they air this interview they take little out as it was a joy to watch from start to finish. Thanks to Sian N, UK, for sharing this with us

Dame Judi at the event -- September 23rd THIS promises to be the most dramatic picnic of the year and the largest outdoor spectacular since the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. Over the next three nights, several tons of fireworks and the combined musical power of seven military bands will erupt around the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, in front of tens of thousands of people and members of the Royal Family. Three times the size of the Last Night Of The Proms, Music On Fire! combines favourite classical and popular music, stars such as Dame Judi Dench and Robert Hardy, and a vast son et lumiere on the theme of war and peace. If the occasion has some of the flavour of the grand old Royal Tournament, it is hardly surprising. The event is the creation of Major Sir Michael Parker, who produced the tournament for 25 years until the Ministry of Defence closed it in 1999 to save money. He has organised most significant national celebrations of modern times, including the Golden Jubilee, and was knighted for arranging the Queen Mother’s 100th birthday parade. A former cavalry officer, Sir Michael is thrilled to be placing incendiaries in the drill square of the academy where he once spent two years as a cadet and where Prince William is currently enrolled. ‘I’m a bit worried that we might blow all the windows out, in which case I will have some explaining to do to the commandant,’ he says. Sir Michael has arranged a dazzling history of the world, from the Garden of Eden to the Apocalypse. Dame Judi Dench plays Eve in the Garden of Eden and Queen Victoria; Sir Donald Sinden is God; and Kate Adie appears as herself. Sandhurst is not normally predisposed to grand theatricals, but this event is highly topical. It is being held in aid of the Army Benevolent Fund, which helps soldiers and ex-soldiers of all ranks and ages, and their families. With the present situation in Iraq and Afghanistan, it fears that it is facing an urgency not seen since World War II. ‘All our costs have been met thanks to our sponsors, so all the ticket revenue will be going to the charity,’ Sir Michael says. Tonight, in front of the Earl and Countess of Wessex, Sandhurst will resemble a vast Glyndebourne as thousands descend with their picnics, rugs and deckchairs. Sir Michael has no fears about the weather but is still working on his latest replica of a nuclear explosion. ‘We’re going right from Creation to Armageddon,’ he says. ‘But it’s all right in the end. Snowdrops appear, the world returns to normal and there’s an almighty rendition of Jerusalem and Land Of Hope And Glory.’ MUSIC On Fire!, supported by the Daily Mail, takes place tonight, Saturday and Sunday, from 7.30pm to 10.30pm. Tickets are available from 11am at College Town Gate. Standard tickets cost £27.50; Commandant’s Enclosure: £38.25. Free parking. Last-minute offer for Sunday night: £10 standard and £30 enclosure. Hollywood Elsewhere Online -- September 19, 2006 Richard Eyre's Notes on a Scandal (Fox Searchlight, 12.22) doesn't open for another three months, but Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett are currently in Los Angeles doing some preliminary Oscar drum-beating. They did a question & answer session before the Hollywood Foreign Press Assoc. yesterday following a screening, and tonight (Tuesday) they're doing back-to-back q & a's in front of separate SAG and BAFTA gatherings. Dench and Blanchett's performances are both presumed to be Oscar quality, but nobody knows anything. The film involves an illicit affair at a private school.

Celebrities including the likes of Dame Judi Dench, Joanna Lumley, David Suchet, Philippa Forrester, Angela Griffin and Suzi Perry are collaborating in an effort to help raise funds and awareness for the ‘Forgotten Children’ charity event, to be held at the world’s most famous toy store, Hamleys, on Regent Street, on Wednesday 30th November 2005. The event will comprise of a private shopping evening, from 7-11pm, and an auction of much loved celebrity teddy bears, including an adorable bear that Joanna Lumley has had since boarding school days! Forgotten Children, www.forgotten-children.org.uk, help children in the developing world, whose bodies are literally broken by disability. Due to families and communities being too poor to afford medical aid and resources these children are often hidden away, literally forgotten. Forgotten Children have been helping children for over 100 years to become active and valued members of their families and communities. They provide children in over 100 countries with a gift that can be anything from a chair to surgery, from crutches to a wheelchair, or schooling. It costs just a few pounds and transforms a child’s life, enabling them to become a living part of their neighborhood. Bill McAllister, Director Forgotten Children: “Disabled children in the developing world desperately need our help. How could you ignore a child whose life would be transformed if he or she was given a crutch? Or turn a blind eye to a disabled child who lies on a dirty floor because there is no chair available? That is how we came to start quietly helping people with disabilities. We’re actually supporting more than 1000 projects now. We’re providing medical intervention, education, rehabilitation and emergency relief to rescue forgotten children. This sort of work requires funds and we are hugely grateful to Hamleys and all of the celebrities who are backing this special fundraising event” TV celebrity Bruce Byron, who plays DC Terry Perkins in ITV’s ‘The Bill,’ will provide further excitement to the evening when he performs songs themed entirely about children, with his band. Last year Byron launched the UK branch of this charity with much success. As a father of two, he has genuine sympathy for children who are broken by disability: “Forgotten children are the most vulnerable people on earth. They live in the world’s poorest communities, they have no voice. Everyday children die simply because no one is there to help them. I am proud to be part of such a worthwhile project. Forgotten Children is working to restore dignity to these children and is essentially providing them with a new life” Bruce Byron For further information contact Max PR & Events, 020 8939 9029 mail@maxpr.biz Directors of Forgotten Children & Bruce Byron available for interview

Patrick Barkham -- Saturday September 17, 2005 -- The Guardian BBC Online Article with the full list of Stars Set in a churchyard and handcrafted by a master blacksmith, it is a typically British version of the Hollywood walk of fame. One hundred and two stars of stage and screen are to be honoured tomorrow when an "avenue of the stars" is opened in the grounds of St Paul's church, Covent Garden. Actors, comedians, musicians and newsreaders including Dame Judi Dench, Alan Bennett, Michael Caine, Sir Ian McKellen, Robbie Williams, John Cleese and Sir Trevor McDonald will be given a five-pointed silver star set in the pavement. The ceremonial opening of the walkway will feature on ITV as part of the channel's 50th birthday celebrations, and will include Cleese and Ricky Gervais meeting for the first time to present each other with the award in California, where both are currently working. Unlike other countries' walks of fame, London's also honours deceased greats, including Cary Grant, Dirk Bogarde, Tony Hancock and Errol Flynn. But as with any award, the choice is not without controversy. Selected by a panel of experts from the entertainment industry, including Michael Grade, there are only two black recipients of a star: McDonald and Lenny Henry, who pointed out the fact in his acceptance speech. Organisers promise to add more stars over the coming years - but no wobbly handprints, in case litigious fans trip up.

Britain's Finest
Actresses -- 2005 VIDEO Plus+: 82236215
Here's a 24-carat treat for film and
theatre fans of every stripe: a lavish countdown of the ten finalists
chosen from a poll of Britain's finest actresses as voted for by Radio
Times readers. As befits such an auspicious affair, the show is hosted by
the delightfully plummy - if ever so slightly "luvvie" - Simon Callow, who
emotes his way through the careers and biographies of Deborah Kerr, Maggie
Smith, Judi Dench et hallowed al, from various positions in a swanky
theatre. You'll find yourself gripped with admiration, not only for the
assembled best, but also for the numerous achievements of the British film
industry. Contributions from the likes of Natasha Richardson and Billy
Connolly add a bit of beef to the glamour.

July 17, 2005 -- 20:00 GMT -- Theatre Royal, Winchester This will be the very first performance of the comic recital which Dame Judi has commissioned her biographer to write. The range of contributors runs from Oscar Wilde and Bernard Shaw to Ogden Nash, Hermione Gingold and Evelyn Waugh, and the show reveals that eccentricity can be found in all walks of life, expressed in an astonishing variety of ways. It also discovers what surprising lessons we can learn from a seemingly eccentric view of both the historical and the contemporary scene. Tickets £25 (Limited to 6 per applicant, because of the anticipated heavy demand) Box office number is 01962 877977 website at: www.winchesterfestival.co.uk Thanks to Lisa S, UK, for sharing this info with us

Wanted: Thirty fans (approx) to attend a cocktail party in NYC next week to celebrate Ladies in Lavender at the Tribeca film festival. It's going to be at a restaurant in Tribeca called Fresh at 3pm on Saturday the April 23rd. Dame Judi won't be there (her plans must have changed) but Dame Maggie -- and Charles Dance -- will attend. It should be really fun and they'll have drinks and food. They'll also be able to do a drawing for tickets for that night's LiL Premiere at the cocktail party. Nothing is definite until I submit the number of people who are interested and get a response back from Eric with all of the final details. Offer subject to change based on more info received. If more than 30 people sign up, then I'll have to come up with a way to make a final selection (probably first to RSVP, first to attend) ... stay tuned ... I emailed Shelley with the Dame Maggie website / forum the other day but haven't heard back from her so if anyone has contact with her -- please let her know about this so she can pass this on to her visitors. Invitation courtesy of: Eric D, Roadside Attractions (via Connie E, USA) Official "Ladies in Lavender" Website Thanks to: Shani A, Vice President, Marketing -- Samuel Goldwyn Films / Roadside Attractions for the Invitation and the Website Link
