Composer playing the dame game BY WENNA COOMBS -- Weston Mercury A Weston-born composer has written the music for one of the biggest films of the year. Nigel Hess, aged 51, composed the entire score for the new film, Ladies in Lavender, starring Dame Judi Dench and Dame Maggie Smith, which is released next week. As well as writing the music, Nigel also helped Dame Maggie polish her piano playing skills. Filming could not start until the score was written and the music is an integral part of the movie. The film will premiere in front of the Queen at the Leicester Square Odeon on Monday. Nigel went to Weston Grammar School before moving to Cambridge where he became music director of the Footlights Revue Company. Since then, he has worked extensively as a composer and conductor in television, theatre and film. Nigel spent five years as house composer for the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) and has written scores for more than 80 television programmes, including Wycliffe and Hetty Wainthropp Investigates. Nigel now lives in London, but his father, John, still lives in Milton Road. "American violinist Joshua Bell and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performed the score and it will be released as a soundtrack on Monday," Nigel said. "I had been involved with the film for a long time because I had to write the music before they could make it. "During filming I had to teach Dame Maggie Smith to play the piano for one scene. She had to look like she was playing it, even though it is my playing which is heard. "I have known Dame Judi for a long time as we were in the RSC together. "We are currently working on another project together, performing music from Shakespeare, and Judi and Patrick Stewart will narrate it. "I am also working on a television series called New Tricks, which stars Amanda Redman. "The film is very enjoyable although audiences might need some tissues handy." Ladies in Lavender, which marks the directorial debut of Charles Dance, will be at cinemas from November 12.

It stars Dame Judi Dench and Dame Maggie Smith as Ursula and Janet, two spinster sisters in the 1930s who discover a handsome Polish castaway on the beach below their Cornish fishing village home. The CTBF is celebrating 80 years of work and last year helped 1000 people with financial assistance totaling £1.3m. The film will go on general release on Friday, November 12.
