DAME JUDI DENCH and Vice President of KCET MARY MAZUR Connie E, USA -- Account of the evening and photos Dame Judi was given the Lumiere Award by KCET. She was the third recipient of the award, the first one having been given to Ian McKellen. She declared that she was going back home and calling Ian McKellen and telling him, "See. I have one, too!" She told of all of the Americans who come over for the ATGB tapings. She said that the Americans come in a large group. The British people who come are put off to one side, and the American group is brought in (true, I've been there). It's lovely, she declared. Prompted by the interviewer, she told the story of her doctor Father responding from the audience during "Romeo and Juliet" when Judi had the line "Where are my Mother and My Father, nurse?" "I'm in row H," her Father called out. She also told the story of him phoning her after a live broadcast of one of six episodes of "Hilda Lessways" to warn her that the man she had become engaged to (in the fictional episode) was a "cad." She did admit, when asked that theatre is her first love and mentioned her two projects next year on stage in addition to playing M in "Casino Royale." This Q&A was in the same
theater in Beverly Hills where the film "Mrs. Henderson Presents" had
premiered the night before. Judi had another screening / Q& A to go to the
same night for SAG members, so we didn't get a chance to talk to her
personally, but she looked and sounded lovely;
