Hurry, hurry, time is running out. Back to the Four Seasons, quick, quick, up to a corner suite, where Dames Maggie Smith and Judi Dench are being prepared for tomorrow's festivities. A man from Harry Winston arrives with their Oscar diamonds -he needs to know the exact size of Maggie Smith's earlobes. "I think I was sent Jim Broadbent's gift by mistake," says Judi Dench. "I opened it, and it was a lovely key ring with his initials on it. JB, JD - it's an easy mistake to make." The Dames are to be groomed beside the hotel's rooftop pool. "The gifts are rather nice this year," says Maggie. "When I was here for the Oscars in 1977, I arrived at my hotel room to find a bottle of warm fizzy wine and two plastic glasses. When I returned later after winning my Oscar, I was amused to see a huge bottle of champagne in a silver bucket instead."

If you knew these dames like I know these dames it would have been priceless to be a fly on the wall. I happen to know the fly on the wall who reports that Dame Maggie asked how to close the stacked emerald-cut diamond bracelet, which was part of the million bucks she was going to wear. Told to press the diamond that was sticking up, she saucily replied, "Oh, you must mean the proud one!" Dame Judi wore diamond drop earrings worth $400,000 and looked like a million in her Reuters photographs. (Judi was determined to erase her unglamorous image as Iris Murdoch, and she succeeded.) The baubles were returned next day, but the Dames kept the platinum bands designed by the jeweler as a memento of the evening.

From the Daily Telegraph -- April 8th "It is not that the Brits do not know how to be grand. The great dames can be sweet and cooperative, while maintaining a cordon of hauteur. And all of the British actresses seemed to have acquired an extra layer of polish this year. Dame Judi looked incandescently glamorous. An East Coast young mother staying at the hotel chided her son for stopping to look at the red carpet palaver. "Darling, it is just people in long dresses getting into cars oh, my goodness! Look! It is Dame Judi Dench!" The actress is said to be slightly embarrassed at being regularly confused with the Queen." Click on this to read the full story
