Dame Judi was a guest on
the Christmas episode of ITV's Parkinson Show with other guests
listed as the fabulous Added 11/28/06 Sian N, UK -- Account of the Parkinson Show Hi Chris, As promised I said I would let you know how the taping of the Parkinson show went if I got in, please find below a little account! Feel free to use all of it, bits of it or none of it!!!! The guests on the show were comedian Lenny Henry, Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins and Judi Dench but not Peter O’Toole as had previously been advised. Before the show Parky said that it was the Christmas show, (hence the Christmas tree and all the decorations!) and that it would be shown the Saturday of Christmas week which I am assuming will be Saturday 23rd December. When Parky was telling the audience who was going to be on the show before the filming actually started he said that Judi’s new film Notes on a Scandal would be released at Christmas, he was then told by the floor manager that it is actually out in February to which he replied ‘well she’s just told me its out at Christmas!’ which got a laugh. Notes on a Scandal is obviously out here in the UK a lot later than the US which is a shame! Judi was the second guest out after Lenny Henry and looked lovely. She was wearing a black dress with knee high boots and looked stunning. Before coming out they showed a clip of Judi in Casino Royale and it was the scene where James Bond breaks into her apartment. Parky started the interview by asking about Bond and asking about how she felt working with Daniel Craig and the criticism that he faced before anybody had even seen the film. He then moved on to Notes on a Scandal and Judi said that she had actually read the book as it had been given to her a few years ago by Geoffrey Palmer. As in previous interviews she said that she never reads a script but that she did the film because she loves working with Richard Eyre and she knew that Cate Blanchett would be playing the role of Sheba. Perky commented on her appearance in the film and she agreed that it wasn’t the most attractive of characters and that she was glad to leave the character in the trailer at the end of a day’s filming! After showing a clip of Notes on a Scandal – which does look like a very good film – they went back to Judi who revealed that she has always been and still is scared and afraid of groups of schoolchildren!! Parky then moved onto Judi’s next project at Stratford which she said she was looking forward to. He asked if she would be singing in the musical and she said that she has 3 songs. She refused to sing a bit from any though as she said they wouldn’t make sense to anyone which was a shame! Parky referred to Michael and her history at Stratford and asked if she had any outstanding memories of being there. She couldn’t think of any which was quite funny!! Eventually she mentioned a story about Macbeth at The Other Place which I’d not heard before. Parky asked Judi if she’d ever done a Pantomime before as he is currently in Panto this Christmas playing the voice in the mirror in Snow White. He asked her to look directly into the camera and say ‘Mirror Mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all’. After she had the reply was a film of Parky’s bit that appears in the Panto which was very funny. When it went back to Judi she asked if he was playing a man or a lady because she couldn’t tell, that was particularly funny as he looked a bit offended! The interview with Judi seemed to be over all too soon and she definitely got the biggest cheer of the night. One thing that always amazes me seeing Judi in real life is how small she is, she has such presence when she’s on stage or on screen that it’s still a surprise to see her completely dwarfed when standing next to people like Michael Parkinson and Lenny Henry!! I hope that when they air this interview they take little out as it was a joy to watch from start to finish. Thanks to Sian N, UK, for sharing this with us
