Rosalind
by JM Barrie
Adapted for radio by Julia McKenzie
Judi Dench leads an all-star cast in this radio adaptation of JM
Barrie's poignant one-act play, Rosalind. For the first time,
however, audiences will also hear Barrie's own exquisite stage
directions as part of the performance. Largely unknown except to the
initiated, these directions are masterful works of prose in their own
right.
By a miraculous act of serendipity, Charles, a young man in the
spring-time of his life, finds himself in the house of his one true
love's mother. Or so it seems on first appearances.
As they talk and compare photographs of their beloved Rosalind, it
begins to transpire that all is not quite as Charles thought. Can it be
that the woman in whose home he is taking refuge, a woman who is nearer
the autumn of her years at least, is in fact the Rosalind who has stolen
his heart?
JM Barrie's delightful play has been brought to life for BBC Radio 4 by
a remarkable cast of some of Britain's most talented actors, and has
been adapted and directed for radio by Julia McKenzie, perhaps best
known for her acting roles on stage and screen, but also an
award-winning director in her own right.
