DAME Judi Dench has launched an appeal to fund pond-cleaning at Outwood Swan Lifeline Sanctuary. The Oscar-winning actress is patron of the Outwood Lane centre and popped in to publicise the appeal last Wednesday afternoon. The centre wants to raise more than £5,000 to desilt two ponds used by recovering swans and other wildfowl. Outwood resident Dame Judi became involved in the sanctuary, which run by Marj Unwin, after her daughter became a temporary volunteer helper. Dame Judi said: "This is a deserving cause. Marj Unwin and her volunteers are doing such a good job helping these wonderful creatures that I am only too pleased to be able to put my name to this project." Anyone wishing to contribute to the appeal should send their donations to Brownshill Cottage, Outwood Lane, Outwood. Cheques should be payable to Swan Lifeline (Outwood).
