Watch the WMP Video Clip of this Interview I think jet-lag was starting to get to them at this
point ... New Transcript of the segment Dames Judi Dench and Maggie Smith have been called living treasures for their work both on stage and in film. Our entertainment reporter, Jill Rappaport, got a chance to talk to them about their latest project. Well, they're definitely two of the most talented dames from across the pond. And now they are stirring it up in "Ladies in Lavender." Dame MAGGIE SMITH: It's a film which has two women our age, and that is rare. (Clip of "Ladies in Lavender") Dame JUDI DENCH: It's just so much of a fairy story. Dame MAGGIE: Yes. Dame JUDI: It's a fairy tale. RAPPAPORT: In "Ladies in Lavender," Dames Judi Dench and Maggie Smith star as elderly sisters who after a violent storm take in a handsome young man who is washed ashore. (Clip of "Ladies in Lavender") Dame MAGGIE: We don't know where he's come from. And then he's--because he stays with us and we look after him... Dame JUDI: It alters us all, doesn't it, a bit. Dame MAGGIE: Yes, it does. It alters the whole--our relationship. (Clip of "Ladies in Lavender") RAPPAPORT: In the beginning, it's very maternal for the both of you. And then as the film unfolds, you realize that you have now taken on a different feeling towards Andrea. Dame JUDI: Yes. I mean, I--I think my character, she's deeply confused about--about everything. RAPPAPORT: And the fact that he is so much younger, you're struggling with that... Dame JUDI: Yes. RAPPAPORT: ...what's proper and what's in your heart? Dame JUDI: And I think she doesn't--probably doesn't even recognize what it is herself, you know, that she feels. She just knows that something's changed. (Clip of "Ladies In Lavender") RAPPAPORT: The one scene for me that really gives the viewer an inside glimpse of what's about to happen is when you touch his head as he put its on your lap. And that's when I thought, `Hm, is that a maternal sign of affection or is this definitely crossing the line for her?' Dame MAGGIE: You're amazed by it, aren't you? You don't know what come over you? Dame JUDI: Kind of an untouched person. Dame MAGGIE: Yes. RAPPAPORT: That's a good way of putting it, an untouched person. Dame MAGGIE: And a big reach for you, Judi, it's a big reach. RAPPAPORT: Oh, oh! Dame Maggie! I think we're revealing a little too much. TMI (too much information)! Now, Dench and Smith have been friends for more than 40 years, having first met on the London stage. The two have since gone on to stellar theater and film careers. Smith is a two-time Oscar winner for her roles in "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" and Neil Simon's "California Suite." And Dench took home the coveted statue for her performance in "Shakespeare In Love." At this point, you probably do get the pick of wonderful scripts, I would imagine. Is that really the case, or are you always struggling to find great work at this point? Dame JUDI: I just think you're lucky if you're offered work. RAPPAPORT: Oh, come on! Even... Dame JUDI: Really lucky. Dame MAGGIE: Well, there aren't that many parts... Dame JUDI: You know. Dame MAGGIE: ...around. RAPPAPORT: Even at your point, as talented as you are? Dame Judi: Age. Dame MAGGIE: It's our age. Dame JUDI: At our age, yes. Dame MAGGIE: That's the drawback. RAPPAPORT: But you would think there would still be wonderful roles? Dame MAGGIE: Well, there are and you're very lucky if they come your way. Dame JUDI: Because there are lots and lots and lots of other people who want to play them. Dame MAGGIE: Yeah. Dame JUDI: So if you're asked to part which requires us both... Dame MAGGIE: Quite a few dames around the bend. Dame JUDI: Yes. Too many dames back around there. RAPPAPORT: But not the real dames. Dame MAGGIE: They are, you know, real dames. Dame JUDI: Yes, they're real dames. RAPPAPORT: What's so great is you ladies have been friends for years, so I would imagine this collaboration just seemed so natural. Dame MAGGIE: Oh, we were easy peas. RAPPAPORT: Easy peas? Dame MAGGIE: Easy peas. Dame JUDI: Easy peasy. RAPPAPORT: Easy peasy. Oh, easy peasy. And now on the big screensy. Oh, I know that one was bad, huh? LAUER: Yeah. You took that one too far. Jill, thanks very much. And we're back in a moment. But first, this is TODAY on NBC.
